Unknown error erases records of some graduation ticket requests
by Colin Emch-Wei
Some graduating seniors were treated to an unpleasant surprise last week when it was discovered that an unknown error erased their record of requests for extra commencement tickets. While “a handful” of students’ requests did make it through the web form and were honored, others did not go through and the Office of Special Events never received records of the request.
It is important to note that the Office of Special Events is not to blame for this issue, as the problem is of an unknown technical nature. Since any record of the requests never actually reached the office, the staff was under the impression that only a few students actually asked for additional tickets. As a result, the affected students believed that their requests had either been denied or simply not processed at that point in time. It is unclear at this time what caused the error, whether it be due to a error on the website or somewhere else along the line. The team in charge of the website suggested that the page did not load completely, but most seniors reported that they had indeed seen a fully loaded confirmation page after they requested tickets.
Unfortunately, because the error was discovered so recently, it was too late for the office to release tickets to any of the graduating seniors. Seating arrangements were already too far underway and the addition of more tickets would not have been a feasible option. In order to remedy this issue, some departments, including the College of Architecture, have opened up overflow seating for additional guests. Students should check with their department for similar accommodations.
The Opening Ceremony for Commencement is to be held on May 17th in the Illinois Tech soccer field.
